Acceptance

We achieve acceptance of a situation when a need or requirement is adequately satis?ed.  To do so, we must do three things: live in the present, recognize talent and achieve tolerance.

In order to achieve acceptance of a situation you must do three things:

  • Live in the present
  • Recognize talent
  • Practice tolerance

Live in the Present

Forward thinkers focus on the present moment.  The past and the future are important, but not nearly as much as the moment we are in right now. We know that the past holds many lessons for us.  We also know it is important to look to the future to identify things that may impact performance. However, the only thing we can control is the present.

How do you know if you are fully present in the current moment?

Many forward thinkers experience a sharpening of colors, sounds, and textures. Others have a laser focus on their current objectives and goals.  If you find yourself daydreaming about the future, or thinking about what you could have done differently the day before, then this keeps you from achieving what you need to today.  How do you develop a competency to stay in the present?  Start by trying to understand what you cannot change and work on those things that you can. Then, accept “What is” because there are certain things you cannot change because they are a part of something larger.  How will you know when you have accomplished living in the present moment?  You will have a renewed sense of passion for what you do, and you will have a greater presence.

Recognize Talent

They are focused on the present moment.  Forward thinkers focus on the present moment and value the resources around them.  They know talent when they see it and surround themselves with it.  How do you do this?  First, identify what constitutes talent in your situation. We all work in different environments and have different needs.  Second, know what you do well and where you could use help.  This is probably the most critical part.  Most people are promoted based on their performance, not on their collaboration and teamwork.  However, when they get into the role of management, all of a sudden they are asked to delegate and manage a group of people. The steps forward thinkers take to surround themselves with talent are intuitive for some and can be learned by others. How do you get there? Focus on the present moment.

Tolerance

To achieve success, forward thinkers understand criticism and intolerance create an environment of instability, which can lead to failure. They also focus on the positive and are willing to open themselves up to different cultures. They know diversity brings richness to not just their work world, but also to the communities in which they live. We understand the value of compassion for others and have now learned the importance of acceptance.  These two critical factors play a key role in a forward thinker’s ability to collaborate.
